Natural Painkillers

Over the counter medicines are handy and effective, but can come with a number of side effects.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a respected and world-renowned health care organization, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (as in Advil or Motrin), or naproxen sodium (as in Aleve) can cause reactions ranging from gas and bloating to stomach ulcers.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an anti-inflammatory compound, but does carry negative side effects if used long term, such as stomach pain, rashes, or headaches.

Although NSAIDs and acetaminophen can be safe and effective for most people when used occasionally, there are a number of pain relief options that are completely natural, which don’t come with harmful side effects.

  • Turmeric, the spice that gives curry its yellow color and unique flavor, contains the compound curcumin - an antioxidant also helps relieve inflammation.

  • Magnesium, an essential mineral found in nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes and leafy greens, has been found to relieve muscle cramps, migraine headaches and fibromyalgia (often a result of a lack of magnesium). Epsom salts, which are high in magnesium, have been recommended for use by doctors and other health professionals for generations.

  • Essential oils have been used for centuries to relieve muscle pain and headaches. Peppermint oil, lavender, bergamot and others, when diluted and applied topically, have been shown to minimize headaches, muscle aches, and other body pains.

  • Applying heat and ice directly to painful areas is a common home remedy.

    • Applying an ice pack can reduce swelling and inflammation shortly after you experience an injury. It can also help take away headache pain.

    • Once inflammation (in the case of an injury) has been reduced, applying heat can help with stiffness that comes with strains and sprains.

Remember, pain is the body’s signal that something is wrong, even temporarily. At Mountain High Health Foods, we have many natural remedies in stock, and knowledgeable staff to help guide you towards products that could help. But be sure to seek professional medical advice if pain persists!
